Oh Long John! One Talking Cat to Rule Them All

Posted by:  Paul     Tags:      Posted date:  November 7, 2011  |  View Comments

Since the Internet has made it possible for millions of people around the globe to view all sorts of content and media, we’ve all seen our fair share of cat videos. We’ve already featured some of them here, but we’ve yet to showcase one that is perhaps the most remarkable of them all.

The Talking Cat

This video was first shown in a 1998 episode of the television program America’s Funniest Home Videos and was also subsequently shown in the United Kingdom featuring a longer clip. It’s a pretty straightforward clip that has a talking cat shown in close up, but the sheer number of phrases that the cat seems to know is just astounding. Prepare to be amazed as you watch the video and see for yourself.

Oh my dog
Oh Long John
Oh Long Johnson
Oh Don Piano
Why I eyes ya,
All the live long day?

Those are the phrases that the cat mutters, according to the agreement by many netizens on the issue. An impressive list, if you ask us, and the way that cat speaks is also quite unique. It all even seems dubbed over at first. That’s just how hard it is to believe the things the cat is saying.

Significance

So the cat says a lot of things. As expected, people went on and tried to give an explanation for the symbolisms involved in the phrases uttered by this particular feline. Another significant aspect of the video is how the phrase “Oh, Don Piano” has somehow translated into modern popular culture. Given the whimsical nature of the talking cat video, “Don Piano” has come to be known as a brief moment where one individual appears to have lost some self-control or had a mental lapse. It even warranted an entry in the Urban Dictionary site.

The phrase also has some meaning in Hollywood circles, being known as some form of scripted answer by a celebrity to an inane or otherwise pointless question. “Oh, Don Piano” shirts was also very popular in the state of Virginia for some time, and a variety of t-shirt vendors have also used the slogan on their products.

Even if there really is no significance to the words said by the cat, having seen a cat that talks so well and so audibly is enough to keep many people happy and amused. It’s a great video regardless of your view of what the cat said, so don’t hesitate to check it out!
