Childproofing Tips for Dog Owners

Sometimes, it can be hard to even consider getting a dog when you have kids in your home or when some kids come to visit you. Never fear—you can always take some necessary precautions called childproofing so that you won’t have to worry about children getting bitten or getting in any danger. Here are some of them.

One way you can ensure the safety of the children is by introducing them to your dog when it’s still fairly young, around when it’s a puppy of 8-16 weeks of age. This will help familiarize both the kids and the pet with each other during their formative periods.

You might also want to consider training your dog not to jump up whenever someone enters the door. This can be very frightening for kids, and the alarm of the children could even agitate some dogs, and this compounds the problem. So it’s still better if your dog wouldn’t jump up at all in the presence of people, especially people who are not familiar with your dog. Of course, generally making sure that your dog is well-behaved is a good first step towards ensuring the safety of children around it.

The dog can sometimes be afraid of children since it’s not very familiar with seeing them nor with how they act. If you expose your dog to the behavior of children—such as by taking your pet to the park or near the playground, taking care to make sure that the dog’s properly secured—it can be very beneficial in that the dog won’t be shocked in case there’s a sudden tantrum or some other reaction.

You should also remember that forcing your dog to come in contact with children might do more harm than good. Say you hold your dog down in order for a kid to touch or pet your dog. If the dog isn’t terrified or surprised, then it’s fine, but when the dog is afraid, it might just make matters worse. We don’t want any growling or biting now, do we? Letting things flow naturally is the best way to go.

Sometimes, children and dogs don’t really mix well in the same setting. However, you, as an owner, can take some steps in order to prevent that situation from happening. Fostering a good environment will help guarantee that kids and your pet dog can live together in peace. This way, they’re always safe and happy around each other.
