It may be unfortunate, but there will eventually come a time when your horse will be beyond their prime. They will eat and store more fat than they burn. They will eventually become overweight and their decreased performance will become a concern. They will not only have a very hard time, they will also be expensive to take care of in terms of special foods and medicine. Wouldn’t you want your horse to be back in shape without breaking the bank? You can save on money and get impressive improvements by following these short weight management tips for your horses.

First Things First

When you notice that your horse is not in great shape or overweight, don’t punish it! That will never help anyone. Be nice and let your horse do things normally like going out of the barn to run around except the diet (look below). The next step is you have to set the weight that you want it to reach after the weight reduction program so you can have a definite goal.

Put It On a Diet

The best way to begin your horse’s diet is to feed it high quality grass and grain and incorporate it into its food. Slowly increase the percentage of grass and grain in its meal until it stops gaining weight altogether. In addition, reduce high fat content ingredients from your horse’s feeds like rice bran or flaxseed. You have to increase or maintain the amount of vitamins you add to the feed so this can replace the lost carbs and fat that you removed when you changed its diet. Do not introduce shock diets on your horse because its metabolism will slow down if you do this and will be detrimental to the horse’s weight loss.

Improved Exercise Program

The next step is to ramp up the exercise regimen from its regular schedule. For example, if for Mondays, you let the horse run for 30 minutes, you can increase the length by 5 minutes gradually until it reaches 45 minutes. It can also help if you can reduce the stress of your horse by not forcing it into exercising. Get it into the mood by doing things it likes first or rubbing its sensitive areas to make it feel comfortable. It will be more conducive to exercising and will help it lose more weight altogether.

Time and Patience

Lastly, you need to spend lots of time and have a lot of patience with the weight loss program because your horse. You will see the benefits in the end, with a more energetic and powerful horse than ever before!
